Many have reported problems trying to access a sleeping Mac remotely. You can use Caffeine, which will temporarily override your energy saver settings and keep your Mac awake with a click on the Menu Bar icon. Another click turns it off.

Is there a way to remotely wake up my iMac???

It's called "wake for network access" or "wake on demand" there are a few apple support threads about using it.

Other option is to wake it by mac address but if you're on another network that may not be a choice.
