whenever I use google Remote Desktop it drops the google chrome icon on the dock as well. any setting I could change so that it doesn't behave this way? I dont use chrome for browser, I like safari better so just useless icon.

I expect that the method used by Google Remote, is that Google Remote Desktop creates and keeps your connection, and the software that you use while the connection is active, is Chrome browser, by default.
If you can use the Google Remote connection, but you don't need or want Chrome, simply quit Chrome, and the icon should disappear.
It does seem possible that Remote Desktop might require you to use Chrome browser.
In that case, you would be stuck with Chrome, even though you may only want the Remote Desktop.
It's not really a Bad Thing™ (just my opinion :D )
