I'm looking for a way to access shared files hosted remotely on an always-online Mac. Is there a safe way to do this via any of the built-in Sharing services in OS 10.4? Can personal file-sharing be accessed via the internet? And if so, is there any kind of encryption when doing this?

Sorry, I'm new to this - any info to get me started would be greatly appreciated.

AppleShare over IP has been available on every Mac since the 1990's.

Thanks for the lead, MisterMe.

Would Remote Login via System Preferences->Sharing be my best shot? It's easy to set that up locally, but I'm guessing there are ports I'll have to forward on my router in order to make that work. Does this sound like the right direction? And am I correct in assuming that SSH is pretty safe?
