I am at a dead end and kind of new to this.

My friend and I are trying to share over seperate networks via the internet. We both have enabled filesharing and are using the IP given in the preferences to attempt to access each others public folder, but no luck.
Both macs are connected to the internet and both run OS X 10.4.

Any advice?

Mmm, with the obligatory, "I think this is a really bad idea," are both macs in the DMZ -- with the hardware firewall bypassed and all incident ports sent to that computer?

DMZ? Bad Idea? Is there a better way to do this? Please let me know. We need to be able to swap large files as we collaborate on them (Logic 7 Compositions).

Try some of the things discussed in this thread instead.

To do FTP or SSH, you will have to set up your router or modem so that the ports these services use are transferred to that computer when the outside world (i.e. your friend) tries to communicate on them. Otherwise they will get blocked by the firewall....
