Hi everyone,

Other than virtualizing here and there, I've been away from Windows as my main operating system for about a decade now and would like some advice on how to implement what I have in mind. The basic scenario is that I have an iMac with a secondary LG Ultrafine display as my main setup, and a work-provided Windows laptop. Up until now I've been disconnecting the Ultrafine from the iMac and connecting it to the laptop when I need to work from the laptop, and I have a separate keyboard and mouse for the laptop. What I'd really love to be able to do would be to keep the Ultrafine connected to the iMac and use a single keyboard and mouse, being able to switch between the Mac side and Windows without needing to reconnect or shift my physical position on my desk. Ultimately the best way to do this would be to virtualize the laptop and then use the laptop as a virtualize machine, but the software to do that requires administrative privileges that I don't have. So I'm trying to figure out an alternative.

For reference, what I do with the laptop is relatively light: using Citrix to access my workplace's electronic healthcare record system; using dictation software; using our workplace text messaging software (now utilizing audio and video conferences more heavily); and more recently, doing video-based visits with patients.

For now, the initial solutions that come to my mind would be using Microsoft Remote Desktop. I'm not sure if that would allow me to fully utilize the Mac's 27" display or if I'd just see the laptop's built-in display in a smaller window, and I'm not sure if it's better to attempt this through the Mac side or to virtualize Windows and then do a Windows-to-Windows connection. I'm guessing that the iMac's built-in camera and any audio devices (dictation microphone) connected to it might not pass on to the Windows laptop, and I'd have to use the webcam from the laptop and connect the dictation microphone to the laptop, too.

Either way, just wanted to put it out there and see if anyone had any other recommendations, or wanted to comment on their own setup.

If you can see your work laptop from the network, you should be able to remote into it with microsoft remote desktop. :)

However, I just noticed you said healthcare records. Yeeahh.. I think you're much better off just plugging into your monitor/keyboard/mouse as you already are.

Well, shoot - looks like you'd need to enable Remote Desktop from the Windows settings. Mine is off, and it requires an administrator to enable it. I can submit a request to IT, but I'm not sure if they'll allow it. As long as that setting it off, I guess there's not a whole heck of a lot that I can do whether I try to use Microsoft Remote Desktop from the Mac side, or whether I try to virtualize Windows on the Mac and connect that way...

Anyway, for your info: in these days of work from home/smart working I use every day the Windows PC using Microsoft Remote Desktop from my Mac Mini 2018.
I also use the headphones (or just the speaker and mic of the mini) during the remote desktop sessions for meetings/calls with Skype/Microsoft Teams (you need to check an option in settings of Ms Remote Desktop connection).
Never tried with the Webcam (we usually do not use video).
Only drawbacks (but I guess related to my wifi) works much better when both Mac and Windows PC are connected using ether net cables instead of wireless
