Remove duplicate app icons from iPad dock

How can I remove an app icon from the iPad dock? Kindle recently updated and placed a new icon on the screen; I attempted to remove the inactive icon from the screen and inadvertently moved it to the dock. How do I get rid of it?

Could you post a screenshot of what is happening?

To move an app, tap and hold on the icon until it starts wiggling. You can then drag it. To delete it, do the same thing, but hit the little X.
