I just installed the driver for my Canon Pixma MX870 Printer. Works Perfectly, the only drawback is that it added an icon to my menu bar that I don't use and don't want.

I'm not new to mac and have tried searching System Prefs under printer, I've tried holding command and dragging it off, I've tried looking for an application with a check box option that says "show icon in menu bar" but no such luck.

I installed the driver from the disc but I did a custom install and only did the driver, no extra software or applications that came with it.

I have attached two images, one of the icon circled, and the other of the options I get when I click on it.

I am prepared to uninstall and reinstall, I just wanted to see if there might be a work around.

Thank you for any and all responses.

Did you go to System Prefs, Accounts and the Login Items and remove the Canon one on the list?

Update: Saw this, you should read this thread at Apple.

Did you not read his post? He already did that. Such action does not always work.

Indeed it does not. And this icon is staring me in the face.... laughing at me.

PERFECTION. I looked in there earlier and didn't see anything. I must not have seen it threw the anger in my eyes. But it is gone now, so I thank you for your advise and LINK to that other site. I had been searching for a while but couldn't find anything as helpful as that.

Is there a way to delete this thread or do I just let it fall to it's death?

There might be other users who have the same issues as you, so the thread will just live on closed.

Awesome. Thanks again. Remove from login items, WORKS PERFECTLY.

Then activity monitor to force quit the app or restart. GONE!

Also, those dodads are called Menu Extras, and are store here in OS 10.5.x
/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras

You might be able to get rid of a stubborn one by going to that folder and deleting it. I haven't tried that. Any brave or desperate soul who wants to give it a go, let us know how it went.

Try Activity Monitor

Another forum said to use the Activity Monitor application (located in Applications>Utilities). If you see it running there, click it and then click "Inspect". This will tell you where it "lives." Then you can move that folder to the trash.

If it won't allow you to delete it, go back to Activity Monitor and click on "Quit Process." This will stop whatever it's doing and then you can delete what's in the trash. This will remove the icon from the menu bar.

You're disabling scanning

FYI
That program is used to connect to the printer and offer a place for scans. So, if you don't run that program, you won't be able to scan a document to your computer.

Or looking at it another way... If you want to scan, remember to start that program.
