Hi

I got an iPhone 3GS with iOS 4.1 (8B117)

When I laid my hands on this, it was jailbroken with Cydia. I restored it using itunes (biggest mistake of my life!)

After that, the phone is in a recovery loop. This one is nasty because, I cannot put it in DFU mode while connected to the USB

I was successful once to get it working, but when I tried updating the firmware, failed

1. I used iREB to put it in DFU (after many trial/error, somehow it went into DFU)
2. Then started TinyUmbrella - pointed it to cydia'a SHSH (4.1 8B11) and started TSS.
3. Then I started iTunes and clicked restore

It worked. and I came till the activation screen. My mistake was that I didnt save SHSH of that. and continued with updating to firmware iOS4.3.4

Then it threw 1015 & 1106 errors.
I tried the above steps again but all were futile. Its stuck on the recovery mode. I can put it in DFU by unplugging the USB. The moment I plug, it goes to recovery.

My priority is to get this phone back to working and preferably unbroken.

thanks

do you have the blobs for 4.1? maybe try to update to 4.3.4?

If you don't want a jailbreak go to 4.3.4 it will restore without any errors.

yeah you should update it to 4.3.4 :)

Thanks for the quick replies. When you say update, do you mean to stop the TSS and allow iTunes to connect and fetch 4.3.4 from apple server ? Thats what I did and ended up in recovery mode?

I have downloaded a blob for 4.3.4 from cydia, should I restore that?

Also, the phone not going into DFU will have any impact?

thanks

If you don't care about jailbreak, then just connect to iTunes and hit restore/update. Don't worry about tiny umbrella or blobs. Just make sure your host file is pointing the server back to apple.

You should still be able to put it into DFU mode.

Try this:

1. Connect USB cable while recovery mode screen is showing.
2. Hold the power button until the screen goes blank.
3. Release the power button. The apple logo should appear, so immediately on release, hold the power and home buttons down and count to 10.
4. After 10 secs, release the power button but keep the home button pressed. Hold until your PC / App recognises you're in DFU mode (iTunes will tell you).

Re:
2. The iphone doesnt even blink if I keep it pressed for an hour

Installing the phone in recovery mode throws up 1015 error

thanks

It is possible that someone previously installed the ipad baseband on this phone. That would explain why a normal restore does not work. If the phone does have the ipad baseband you will have to use custom firmware created by either pwnage tool or sn0wbreeze.

The other thing that is worth trying is open tiny umbrella go to advance mode and uncheck the box that says leave host file pointing to cydia on exit. Then close tiny umbrella and do a normal restore.

Hmm... the main problem I am facing is - getting the horse to the water (I mean getting the device to DFU). It goes into DFU mode if its disconnected from the system. Once plugged in, it goes to recovery mode. If I press Wake/Sleep button & Home, it reloads and brings up Apple logo. Then once again it loads apple logo before settling at the recovery mode.

I wish there was a format option somewhere

Ok, so hold power and home until it resets and as soon as the apple logo appears, count to 10 and let the power button go. You'll have the recovery screen up at first but it should then go blank after 10-15 after holding just the home button.

Nothing happens. However noticed that the phone restarts randomly. Because Windows makes a sound when a usb device is connected.

Re: sn0wbreeze, I tried downloading 4.3.4, 4.3, 4.1 but it doesnt recognize the ipsw. Is it that particular exe (2.7.3 is current) can handle only certain versions?

Totally stumped

thanks

If you put the phone in DFU mode offline and then plug it in, it should not go to recovery mode. The only thing that should happen is that itunes should come up with a message and recognize the device.

When the phone is correctly in DFU mode the screen is black.

Hmmm.... I am able to put it in DFU while unplugged. However as soon as I plug the USB in, it wakes up, shows apple logo & recovery mode.

Is there any other way? Most of the hacks fail because the iphone isnt going into DFU mode.

thanks

hmm. So your PC the iPhone out of DFU once it's connected via USB?

So you can't connect the phone to you PC, turn it off and then enter DFU mode from there?

You could try going to Settings < General < Reset and then Reset all settings & erase contents, it's unlikely to resolve your issue, but it's worth a try and it's not going to make your situation worse.

I had the same problem when i was helping my friend's iphone 4. It will always exit DFU mode when it's plugged into computer. I used another computer and it works.

Hi

The phone is stuck on recovery mode, I am not able to go further. I had managed to get in once (as mentioned yesterday) - but I tried to update it to 4.3.4 and it went back to recovery mode.

thanks

Please let me know any other solutions? Or is it the end of the road?

I tried to print out the environment variables, and nothing returned. Is it possible that there is no OS at all? What should I do to get to install iOS?

thanks

Not sure this information is of any help:

the apple logo comes on twice when I push it out of recovery using tinyumbrella or iREB

First time apple logo comes on screen and stays for around 36 seconds. After that the screen blanks out like its gone into DFU. Then it comes back again and within 5 seconds goes to recovery mode.

thanks

Apple is signing 4.1
Just restore to 4.1 directly from iTunes
Don't use tiny umbrella or anything ..

1015 u will get.. Kick it out of recovery using tinyumbrella then ;)
