I've always been using Gmail using the browser on my map. But while switching from snow leopard to Lion a few months back, I decided to give the mail app from Apple a go.

I added my accounts without a problem, however Gmail seems to have 700k 'unread' emails.

Note: I do use labels and such and have a few other Gmail accounts forward emails to the main account. So there are probably tons of emails I missed (such as those send by Twitter which I label and don't land in my inbox as important mail) over a long period of time.

Is there an easy way to get rid of that number in the sidebar? When I right click and check 'mark all as read' it basically crashes or is busy marking them as read, which can take hours or even days.

Try marking them all as read in your gmail account through the web interface.

Thanks. I used some filters to get rid of 300k posts. However the other half seems to fall under "All Mail", which I can't filter out so it seems using 'is:unread'.
