I've read that when selling your iphone to someone else, you should take out your sim card. But what about when you are exchanging or returning a phone to Apple?

I got my iphone 5 last week but it had a nick on the side. I called Apple and they sent out another one but told me it would be weeks until I received it. They said I could use the other one in the meantime. It ended up shipping early though and I'll receive it tomorrow.

Should I swap the sim cards (the brand new one for the now used one), take the sim card out of the first phone (and not swap) or just not worry about it?

Thanks for the feedback.

Call your carrier and they will tell you the best solution with either current sim or new sim. As far as returning the phone, return it without the sim.

As a side note, I got my iPhone 5 (purchased online at apple.com) last week too and decided to exchange it. Apple told me I could use the one I have in the meantime as they said it would take weeks.

Interestingly the order (for the unit being exchanged for) now says "preparing for shipping" and it looks like I will receive it early. I wonder where these exchanged units are coming from? Will they be brand new in retail box?

Good to know. Thanks. And to answer your original question: I would just take out the SIM card from the phone I have now and put it in the new phone when it arrives. That's what I intend on doing.

Take out the Sim card from the phone you are sending back. If you are getting a new phone which uses ATT it will have a sim in it ,replace the sim with the one you took out. If verizon just put the card in as the Sim slot will be empty.
