My SuperDrive in my 24" 2008 iMac is dead. Even without a disk inserted it keeps making weird noises and after it goes quiet it only takes an open command searching finder to start it off again.

It'll take about 10 mins to quiet down again.

I don't have the money to add another one or stick a HDD in there.

I remember the last time I had my Mac open I disconnected it and the Machine wouldn't start but I only disconnected it on the drive end, not the logic board end.

Before I open it up does anyone know if I can remove it completely and still have the machine start? It seems that if the temp sensor isn't connected it won't start and if the drive isn't connected it wont' start. Is there anyway around this?

I have the 2007 Aluminium iMac and just removed the ODD some months ago, as it was acting up to. I do not remember what I did with the temp sensor, but the iMac still runs fine.
