Is there any way I can remove the dark borders around the screen when I show the desktop with Exposé and make the applications move completely offscreen instead of having the edges show?

Well, you could just hide all the applications except the Finder. That sounds like what you might want. You can do this two ways. First, from any appliction you are in, hold down both the command and option keys, and simultaneously click anywhere on the desktop, or the Finder icon in the Dock. I'd click on the desktop instead of the Finder icon in the Dock, because clicking the icon in the Dock will also open a new Finder window. Or, the other way, if you are already in the Finder, is to go to the "Finder" menu next to the Apple menu and choose "Hide Others".
