Removing clicks, lip and mouth noise in garageband

I'm recording a text book in garageband with apogee duet, macbookpro and rhode 2NA. (1 chapter per new file, mono, realtrack). Problem: I have a lot of breath and mouth sounds and clicks in between sentences, which are sometimes difficult to edit - and very time-consuming. I don't know if I should use a gate when recording, and if so, how much? I haven't used a gate for the first few chapters, so if I did apply it now, would there be a noticeable difference between those first non-gated and any later gated chapters?
I have a pop filter. I've tried repositioning the microphone, but when I move it further away, I lose quality/resonance. I don't want to do any eq or mastering, nor do I want to manipulate the file too much at the recording stage.
Any feedback is much appreciated.

It's okay to try the gate on the tracks you've already recorded.

Have you tried, instead of putting the mic furthur away, to place it a bit above your mouth?

Yeah, in agreement with the previous statement, try positioning the mic at the bridge of your nose, angled down toward your mouth, with the pop filter still straight up and down.
