Removing headphones unpauses Ipod?

I'm fairly new to the I-phone (less than a month), so this may be a known issue; or easy setting to fix.

I'm listening to my playlist on my phone at work via headphones. I get an office call, so I PAUSE the song, and take off my headphones. A minute later I am doing whatever, go to leave, take out headphones, and this somehow unpauses the playlist, it starts blaring the song, even on silent mode. Anyway to get it to stop unpausing the playlist when I unplug headphones?
