I have an iPhone 3G (not 3Gs) that came jail broken, bought second hand 8 months ago.

I discovered the hard way, what happens when trying to run an update off iTunes, was told essentially it was bricked on numerous forums, but, by fluke found a way to get it running again.

Basically, running iOS 4.1.0, modem firmware 06.15.00, model MB633C

I have no need for the jailbreak, and I'm sure it's the cause of some 'slowness' I experience in startup/shutdown. I would like to keep it unlocked, was told it was originally for FIDO, which is what I have but just in case... unlocked would be great.

When the new iOS came out I figured I could finally upgrade and overwrite but seems that new new iOS is for the 3Gs and up.

Any way to wipe this stuff off the phone? Force overwrite perhaps?

Again, bought used so, no blobs (I think is the name).

Thanks

are you sure there are no blobs, check at the top of cydia in green writing. To update the fw you need to cook a custom fw using PwnageTool since you have the iPad BB installed (which is why official FW fails for you). Check www.iclarified.com for tutorials

I have Cydia open, no green text at the top though...

When I tried an upgrade when I first got it, totally messed it up badly. I then tried every version of iOS I could, turned out 3.? worked, after which 4.1 worked... any other versions in any order failed to work.

I suspect at some point stuff got wiped out or whatever.

On that site now, still looking for a tut... not much luck though, 50 tuts to jailbreak, not so many on custom FW.

Ya I'm not seeing anything searching around. Few things for 4.1 installation, lots for jailbreaking... but not seeing much in the ways of getting a normal copy of 4.2.x installed and losing the jailbreak.

Anyone got a link?

Anyone? anything?

Maybe I'm searching the wrong terms but, only stuff I'm finding for pwnage is to jailbreak with 4.1 which is the opposite of what I want.

Do this to downgrade your BB so you can use apple stock fw:
http://www.redmondpie.com/how-to-downgrade-iphone-06.15.00-baseband-to-05.13.xx-iphone-3g-bootloader-5.8-only/

(just be very careful you don't brick your phone, because if something goes wrong while downgrading the BB then the phone could be bricked (this is the only time software could brick an iPhone-downgrading BB)

Then after the BB has been downgraded you can restore as NEW in iTunes normally w/ original apple fw and keep updating w/ normal fw from there on.

Thanks, I'll have to read through and possibly give it a try.

I never use anything that isn't free already anyway, and a few apps don't work or need a newer version so, hoping to just get this thing back to an out-of-the-box state.

3G does not require SHSH Blobs people need to stop saying it does! ;) only the 3GS and iPhone 4 require SHSH Blobs! IF you want to stay unlocked you must also remain jailbroken. Many of us are jailbroken and unlocked with no issues either slowness or battery life. people that have these problems installed the wrong apps. So that said if you want to go 100% unbroken you will have to uninstall your ipad baseband at the risk of harming your device. other then that you will always have to use cooked software like redsn0w or Sn0wBreeze.

Sigh... if not one thing it's another.

I don't have WiFi so always makes stuff harder than it should be. Went to Starbucks, grabbed a coffee and free WiFi, downloaded fuzzyband and sadly Bootloader 06.02, not 5.8.

I just did the exact same steps a few days ago on my 3G

You need to maintain your jailbreak in order to use ultrasn0w to unlock.

However, in order for you to upgrade here are the basic steps you need

redsn0w 0.9.14b2
iphone 3G 4.2.1 firmware

You first downgrade your baseband from 06.15.00 to 5.13.00. Then use redsn0w to make a custom ipsw by preserving the baseband, then ipsw will be NO_BB_......., then you shift click restore in itunes to install this custom ipsw. After all is successful, you will be on 4.2.1 with baseband 5.13.00, and cydia installed as well. Afterwhich, if you want to unlock, just install ultrasn0w, if not, then don't install it.

My main goal is to eventually remove everything, jailbreak and unlock and restore it to being just a regular iPhone.

I bought it pre-jailbroken, and didn't know that trying to update it from iTunes would cause issues... took like 8h to unbrick.

That was almost 2yrs ago, and although working, it sometimes is super slow at startup, no gps, and apps die and never work again at random. The previous owner said it was with FIDO, a cell company in Canada, which happens to be where I'm with as well so... hoping to just rid the whole thing of anything jailbreak related. :S

After the process it was at that screen saying that a restore needed to be done, image of the plug and emergency call only option... couldn't get out of it. I went into iTunes, did the shift+restore and reloaded iOS4.1 and after a while of loading, it seems restored and showing Modem Firmware 05.14.02.

...so

Does this mean it's a 'normal' phone? can I run the update on iTunes?

Yep. Looking at your BB, you aren't on the iPad baseband, which means you shouldn't have anything preventing you from updating.

Just connect to itunes and click update/restore and you should be updated to 4.2.1 without jailbreak.

Sigh... getting an "unknown error occured (11)" message and back to that Recovery Mode screen.

... it never seems to run as smooth as it should for this stuff on this phone. Just one of those things I suppose. :D

Ah... I just clicked the update in iTunes and let it do it's thing.

When failed, checked online and few suggestions were to update iTunes and reboot, which I did, it discovered the phone in recovery mode and I clicked to recover and voila, rebooted with 4.2.1 running.

Also, all the apps that stopped working, are now working again finally... few quit running a year ago and uninstalling/re-installing didn't work.

Finally... a fully working iPhone. When I upgrade I'll make 100% certain it has NO jailbreak pre-installed. It was glitchy and I had no backup files or SSH blobs. :S

Glad that worked out for you. I still need my unlock so I am jailbroken.

Just in case you need this bit of info later on. You can still unlock your phone at some point in the future. You would still need redsn0w, after which you jailbreak, install ipad baseband again (up to 6.15.00) and THEN run the downgrade again, and you will be back on 5.13.00, which is a baseband supported by ultrasn0w for unlocking your phone.
