removing notification in mail page

At the bottom of my iPhone mail page is a message that says '1 unsent message'. I cannot remove it and at times it shows it is 'sending 1 message' or it will say 'connecting' and will not stop 'connecting' until I hit the off button. How do I stop the process and how do I remove the message? I cannot seem to find this information anywhere and have no idea what it is that it keeps 'sending'.
