As a workaround, you can create an email alias (I believe you can have up to 5 active aliases) in your .mac account with a name that you like better. Just use this alias as your primary email name.

Yup, that's what I would've suggested too, but it won't help if you want to publish any calendars or use the homepage feature without the abusive name you chose originally!!
Gotta be worth an email to .Mac to see what they can do, they must have come across the problem before and it'd be better to tackle it before you create any content if they need to delete the account or something I'd guess.
