I'm a PhD student and I often have to write 16+ hours straight for several days in a row. I usually have a dozen or so PDFs open at once because I am constantly switching between multiple sources. In order to be as efficient as possible, I have the PDFs sized and positioned very precisely so I can see which one is located where and I can click on them without having to hunt around. It's pretty damn important because losing my train of thought can cost me a lot of time. But whenever my iMac goes to sleep, Preview closes. When I reopen it, all the PDFs reopen completely out of order and resized. One of two solutions would help me out immensely.

One: A way to save the windows' positions to always open the same way. This would be optimal. A third-party app that does this would be perfectly acceptable; I don't care if it cost me money.

Two: A way to keep Preview from closing. I've tried different power settings, including "prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off" and turning off "put hard disks to sleep when possible" but inevitably when I leave the computer for any length of time (because I have to sleep eventually), Preview closes down. It is infuriating.

The first image is how I need everything, and it takes me about 15 minutes to do because I order them specifically based on various criteria. The second image is what they look like after I return to my computer. I'm stressed out and under enough pressure as it is and this is a horrible way to restart a writing session. Any help or advice? Thank you!
