My MacBook Pro 2010 has a MagSafe port issue and would cost SGD$180 to fix. My main use is for school so it’s mostly office and preview. A refurb 2017 tbMBP would cost about SGD$2200. I’m wondering if I should repair and wait for the 2018 refresh or just get a 2017 model. I’m thinking of running solidworks on boot camp so the 2018 model with new quad core processors may be better.
I’m also hoping that the keyboard will be improved in the new one.
Any help is appreciated!

If you can wait then wait (if your apps run well enough and it’s not costing you money or stopping you doing what you need) if not then buy now.

fix it yourself!

it easy to do (ish) I did it in my 2010 MacBook and very similar as it a sub board plugged into the main board.
You can buy the port off ebay as I did for mine.

You do need remove motherboard though and I used the ifixit guide to do mine.
hour or so should be no more, even if take time 1.5hours tops I'd guess.

Definitely repair. The old 2010 MBP is still a great computer. I've got the 15" anti-glare version and I love working on it. Still fast and still viable in my opinion. of course, it's been upgraded to an SSD and more RAM, and that helped.

As mentioned above you could try the repair yourself.
But don't try unless you're at least somewhat confident of your abilities.

The cost to have it repaired isn't really "too high" -- IF you keep using it for at least another year or two.

Even then, if you get a new one, you could either keep the 2010 "as a spare", or perhaps sell it for a very modest price...
