Liquid damage on my Macbook Air 2022 M2 two weeks ago. Screen turns on, but keyboard and mouse don’t work. Went to apple store and when they attached an external mouse and keyboard, only the external mouse worked. Sent it in to apple repair and was told logic board needs to be replaced. Cost was estimated $587 +taxes and I was supposed to call to ask for a full quote and didn’t. Instead asked them to send it back thinking I could get a better deal elsewhere. Called and emailed after I got the laptop back and they refused to give me a quote at that point. Now if I send it back it’ll be $100.

Didn’t find a better deal, went to a tech shop and was told repairs would be $1400. So I bought a new MacBook Air 2020 M1. Got a good deal on Best Buy - with AppleCare and tax the total was $948 for a brand new laptop. Was this the right decision? Should I try to get the 2022 MacBook fixed and return the Best Buy laptop or will the repair costs amount to the same?

Personally, I would return the M1 and get the M2 repaired. The repair will come with a warranty. Probably a new battery as I suspect Apple replaces everything in system. The M2 is also a little better machine than the M1 in my opinion.

Ultimately it is you that have to decide. What works for me, may not work for others.

M2 MBA > M1 MBA

Repair cost is much less than M1 MBA.

Return M1 and get your money back.

MagSafe alone would be a big benefit.

Some M1 MBAs suffer from spontaneous screen cracking.

One caveat. Apple Care coverage is well worth it. That makes keeping the M1 more attractive. However, is there any way of getting AC on your M2 after it's repaired?!

P.S. Just thought of another critical wrinkle. The M3 MBA is likely to be released in just a few months. That could be well worth waiting for. What that means for your decision-making, however, is a big question mark.

It could mean getting the M2 fixed and then selling it in a few months…

Likely, you want reassurance about having picked up the M1 MBA. What are its specs (RAM & HD capacity) vs. the M2? That's key in determining which is the better one to keep.

By the way, if the water damage was the result of eating or drinking around the Mac, I'd strongly recommend never doing that again. No water or food anywhere near the Mac! I learned that lesson the hard way….
