Hello guys, I'm in a dilemma.

My main laptop is currently the Macbook Pro 15" 2015 with dedicated GPU (A1398). The machine has been excellent for my work use aside from one main issue. The screen flickers from time to time when using the dedicated GPU, similar to the issue here. The issue is non-existent at first but has become serious over time. The only fix was to download the GFX card status app and switch to integrated only.

The technician is suspecting fault with the GPU and I got quoted $500 for a logic board repair that carries a warranty period of 6 months. He's also quoting a repair to my speaker with another $100 (Yeah my speaker cracked), making the total repair bill around $600.

$600 is a lot to spend on a machine that's probably worth only $850 for now. Should I just write the laptop off and get the 16" base model?

I concur with your intuition. The repairs cost too much in regards to what the computer is worth now. Time to get a new one.

That’s a hard situation.

How much are the parts and so you think you could do it yourself?

Also, another way to look at this...

Repairs are $600 and a new one is 4 times that amount at $2.4k

Possibly get your battery replaced as well. :)

You could keep your laptop for another couple of years since it still meets your needs

I'm gonna wait and see what Apple has in store for refreshed 16" this year.

I can probably replace the speaker myself and that's going to cost me around $60 for the parts.
The issue is the logic board repair which I don't have the expertise or the necessary tools to do it myself.

But you are right too. Spending $600 vs a $2,099 (on Amazon) is a no brainer question.
I'll probably ask for more quotes from other technicians.
