In 2018 I purchased a new 15" MPB to replace my mid-2012 MBP. I loved the 2012 but the sound card failed so I made the move. I hate the keyboard in my 2018. I have continually struggled with sticking and dead keys and the feel has never worked for me. I believe I can take advantage of the Apple repair program to get a new top case including battery, but am not sure how the replacement keyboard will feel. I have read some threads that seem to indicate the replacement for the 2018 actually has a different type keyboard, with more travel and better feel. Can anyone help with that? Is it still butterfly design?

The other option I have is to just do a trade to a new 16" MBP, maybe even a refurb. I am willing to make the upgrade if the keyboard is more reliable and has a feel closer to my 2012. Besides personal use, I use the laptop for work which requires me to type quite a bit, but otherwise it doesn't do any real heavy lifting, so I suspect the base model would be adequate.

With the current Covid problem, I can't even get to my Apple store to test drive, so I am looking for feedback from anyone who may have the answers. Thank you in advance.

The "new" 16" keyboard is the same pre-2016 chicklet keyboard. That should be the same as your 2012.

Get the refurb 16".

Just FYI, I'm in the same boat, planning to trade in my old MacBook Pro since the repair didn't work and I can't sell it in its non fully functional state. I'm going to trade mine in for a refurb and heads up that when you do that, you have to do the trade in as a separate thing and you'll get a gift card which you can retroactively apply to your refurb purchase by calling their customer support.

No, it's not.

If you bring in 2018 it will be replaced with a 2019 keyboard which is slightly improved but still a butterfly keyboard. Not the new 16" keyboard. 2016/2017 model repairs DO NOT get this upgrade.
