Repair Permissions doesn't work

Suddenly my DVD burner doesn't work (using Toast & Popcorn , 24" iMac), and gives me various "Medium Sense" errors. This has happened in the past with previous versions of OS X (currently on 10.5.7), and was always fixed by repairing permissions. Now, however, that doesn't fix the problem. Additionally, when I run "Repair Permissions" a second time, and a third time, fourth time, etc.....It keeps finding the exact same differing permissions, as if they were never fixed the previous times. Of course, when it's done running, it tells me they were all fixed. Then I run it again, and it finds all the same differing ones again. Does anyone know how to repair "Repair Permissions"??

Have you tried the "verify disk" option?

I was just coming here to ask the same permissions question. I've had some problems with software hanging lately and normally a quick repairing of the permissions fixes things. I am running 10.5.7 on a 4 month old MacBook(2Ghz).

"Verify Disk" tells me my HD volume is ok. But running "Verify Disk Permissions" brings up a list of a b'zillion differing permissions, as well as lots of the infamous Leopard "ACL found but not expected". Running "Repair Permissions" doesn't appear to repair anything.

Update: Tried the demo version of Cocktail, had it repair permissions. Then I ran Disk Utility again to check, and no luck - still a zillion differing permissions. Looking around online, I see others have had issues repairing permissions in Leopard. Starting to think this is a 10.5.x bug. Never had this problem with any other version of OS X.

I've been having the same problem for 2 Years! Are they ACL Files? Apple & most people say, that's OK. But people like me can't live with that. When I first ran Onyx, it repaired them all the first time & then they came back & tried to repair again & did not work. I then downloaded a trial of MacPilot & it got rid of them, but you can only use it once (Trial), so they came back. I can't for the life of me understand why Disk Utility does not get rid of these. I thought that was one of Disk Utilities' Functions. It's things like these, that I hope they don't overlook in Snow Leopard. But if they are ACL, Apple says to ignore. Your DVD Burner, is another problem. Do you have latest Firmware ?

btw, I have done a complete "Erase & Install" of Leopard & theses files still come back immediately after doing all your updates. So maybe it has to do with Updates? I don't know.

The "ACL found but not expected" thing is just a minor side issue for me. That started happening with the first release of Leopard. It never seemed to cause a problem, and everyone said to just ignore it. I don't even know what an ACL is.

The problem I'm having is suddenly I have tons of differing permissions, and "Repair Permissions" says it fixes them, but then I run it again and it finds all the exact same differing permissions. This seems to be causing my burner to not burn disks. With previous versions of OS X, when the burner stopped burning, repairing permissions always fixed it. Additionally, if I ran "Repair Permissions" a second time, it would then show that there were no differing permissions. So it appears that with Leopard, "Repair Permissions" just plain doesn't work.

And yeah, I do have the latest burner firmware. It's the burner that came with my imac, and my software is up to date too.

So if anyone knows how to repair "Repair Permissions", please chime in!

Update: I cleaned the optical drive's lens, and now it's burning successfully again (no more coaster!)

Since it's hard to get to the lens on a slot loaded iMac drive, you people might be interested in the method I used which I found online:

Dip a thin material (I used a thin T shirt) in alcohol, and wrap it around a credit card. Then move the card in and out of the drive slot. Make sure computer is off when you do this.

Since I currently am unemployed, I didn't even want to spend the $10 or so on a cleaning disc, so I used the above method instead. Seems to have worked beautifully!

I still have no idea about what's up with Repair Permissions. I tried using Leopard Cache Cleaner, but it also failed to repair the permissions. I guess as long as I don't experience any more symptoms, I won't worry about all those differing permissions.

Wow! What a great idea. I can't believe it worked! Those cleaning discs never worked for me in the past. I think you came up with a better solution. Glad to hear your back to burning. So it was not a software issue. Good to know. I have a LaCie d2 DVD-RW external & it was giving me some issues a while back, but it seems to have fixed itself. Thanks for the tip!

Actually, my burning issues continue. After my last update here, I burned another coaster. It gets part way through the burn, but the drive makes all kinds of noises as if the laser is moving around constantly, trying to focus on the disc. So then I had the idea to lay the imac flat on its face while burning, reasoning that maybe the optical drive would work better if it's lying horizontally, as God intended. The burn worked. Can't come to any conclusions based on just one successful burn, but I will (believe it or not) continue to burn this way until it doesn't work. Yeah, it sounds silly and it's pretty awkward, but it's better than not burning.

Oh, and I currently am wondering if these new Philips discs I recently bought have anything to do with it because when I tried burning a couple old RW discs which I've used many times, the old ones worked fine.
