Hi guys,

A number of years ago I bought the rMBP 15" 2012 (the one with the faulty video chip) which was fixed by Apple under Applecare but failed again shortly after the Repair Extension Program ended. The laptop has just been sitting around for the last few years since I replaced it with a rMBP 15" 2016 model.

As I am intending on visiting LA/the US later this month, I was thinking of maybe getting the laptop repaired if I can find a place that can do it at an OK price, as right now it's just collecting dust - I was thinking by connecting an external thunderbolt enclosure to it that it could be an OK media and file server (yes I could probably buy a Mac mini or something, but if I can repurpose this old laptop in some way it would probably be better than just throwing it out).

I saw a video by Rossmann Group going through how to repair this type of laptop and it's faulty video chip design and although I could ship it all the way to NY to get it fixed by them, I wondered if anyone had any recommendations for somewhere in LA that could fix it for a similar price?

Thanks in advance for your help/suggestions!

Thanks for the suggestion - I'll look into them. If possible though, I'd like to try and get it serviced by someone local in Los Angeles, as it will be a little bit easier with time and it will be less hassle with shipping it there and back.

Hoping someone has a suggestion for a repair company in LA.

Well, I wish you luck with that. Just getting thru the traffic in and around Los Angeles might be a greater hassle for you than shipping your rMBP to have it repaired. ;)
