I just checked the repair status for my iPod 4G and the site states "Original Product Returned", with no other details.

Kind of a dumb question, but does this mean they didn't do any repair or replacement at all? The reason I sent it in was because the hard drive was extremely erratic, which I assume is part of AppleCare coverage?

That update status means they have received the iPod you sent them.

no, that means they sent you your original ipod back...because the defect isnt covered by their warranty or because they didnt find a defect at all.

i already had this with my old 4g.
