As an afterthought to yesterday's purchase of a LaCie Floppy Disk Drive from NYC's Tek-Serve, I mentioned to the employee who was assisting me that my iMac was purchased from Tek-Serve on 09-12-00. In looking at my receipt, the cost breakdown was as follows:

iMac DV+ Indigo 450 MHz ... $1,299.00
256 MB SDRAM PC-100 ... $419.00
AppleCare Protection ... $138.00

I mentioned that the extra memory that brought the unit from 64 up to 320 MB stopped being recognized around March 2005. He said to bring the unit in because "most memory upgrades sold and installed by Tek-Serve are covered by a lifetime guarantee."

If mine was determined to qualify, I would receive a new 256 MB stick and have it installed at no charge. Today I plan to return with a copy of my receipt to try and get a more definitive answer as to whether it qualifies or not, before going through the process of unhooking various things and then transporting it into Manhattan.

If the memory aspect is good, I was thinking of asking them what would be involved to replace the internal DVD-ROM. When I first experienced trouble with that, it led to the purchase of a Yamaha external CD-burner, but that performance was spotty at best and lasted six months before dying.

I need to burn 50 playlists in iTunes and presently am at a stalemate. Because of the problems mentioned with Yamaha, I would prefer the built-in capabilities of a new DVD-ROM drive. That should not be too costly an upgrade, but I'd like to know if any members have done this type of upgrade to a G3 iMac or know of those who have.

My plans for a new laptop remain unchanged, but if I decide to wait until the Intel based Macs are released in the second half of 2006, I would be necessary to have my present computer performing more tasks than it can handle. Feel free to share your ideas ... thanks.
