Repeated duplication of gmail contacts on iphone 4 after syncing

Hi, every time I sync my iphone 4 to my computer, my address book of gmail contacts on my phone shows multiple duplications. I go to my google contacts, merge duplications and resync. Then, when I open my contacts back up on both the iphone and in my google contacts, there are multiple duplications again, sometimes 4-5 times. Any ideas how to keep them single entries???? I'm not sure why they keep duplicating...
