I just found these videos on Youtube about how to remove the battery on the MacBook Pro 15" Retina with a thread.

Has anyone here tried this yet?

 
Essentially they are just cutting the adhesive same as the iFixit guide. Its totally doable, that being said it might be worth heating the adhesives first to make them a little softer.
 
I've been removing the batteries from retina MBP with a trusted putty knife. It took a lot of practice but it's the quickest way I've found. Using thread/fishing line is safer for sure.

Well, obviously one would have to cut the adhesive under the battery somehow.

What is interesting is the way he does it.
