I'm contemplating trading in my 2011 17" MBP for a 2011 27" iMac in the near future. One of the issues that arose is replacing the drive in the iMac for an SSD. I am aware that switching the drive out for a non-apple SSD (or hard drive for that matter) can cause the thermal sensor to go crazy, leading to maxed out fan speeds. Since the issue is firmware based, would the problem still exist if I stuck the STOCK SSD that came with my MBP into the iMac instead? The SSD should have Apple firmware in it.

Pretty sure that unless you swap in an ssd that came with a 2011 iMac you are gonna have fan issues as the iMac has firmware that other Macs don't. You would be better off leaving the stock drive in place and adding an ssd to the system.
