So, I have had issues with my FD in my iMac15,1 pretty much since I got it. Loads of trouble with BootCamp, the FD become "unfused" multiple times, and problems with performance.
About 2 weeks ago, I was in the Windows environment, did an update there, and suddenly everything went south. The FD was apparently failing.
I could not install an OS reliably in either environment, getting an I/O error, and problems with the drive, so I decided to replace it. I was hesitant as the retina screen is glued/taped on, and it looked like relatively major surgery, but I ended up switching out the 3TB FD for a 2TB SSD.
Major difference, and very happy with the switch, but...
Apparently when the drive is switched out, it's the HD portion of the FD only, not the 128GB SSD portion. So, Terminal reports in diskutil list that my 2TB SSD is disk1 (further partitioned to 1TB in Windows/1TB Mac), and disk0 is (I think) the 128GB SSD.
When I hold "option" during startup, I get the option of the Windows partition, "MacDisk" which is the 1TB Mac partition, but the first option is "Macintosh Disc" which is slow to boot, and fails with the "cross out" symbol. I am wondering if this is the 128GB SSD, without a good install of MacOS on it.
What to do? I cannot see the 128GB SSD in Disk Utility, nor am I sure I should try to format it if I could. I could probably figure that out in Terminal, but should I bother? Am I in fact seeing the SSD portion of the original FD? Is it soldered into the main board, so that it's non-replaceable, or usable in the usual sense?
I just don't want to screw up the installs I have now. If I try to use the BootCamp control panel in the Windows environment to "restart into OSX" it chooses the "Macintosh Disc" option, which results in that "crossed out" symbol, and need to hard reboot, and then hold option, etc.
Just wondering what I should do here, or if I missed something along the way. The SSD portion of the FD is never mentioned in the online videos of drive replacement, and I for sure didn't see any SSD on the drive I pulled out. It is simply labeled "3TB" and makes no reference to fusion at all, so I assume that the SSD was located somewhere else, and remains in the computer.
Thanks for any help and advice!
