replaced iphone 3gs battery now won't turn on and feels very hot

Haven't posted on here for a while
Right brought a faulty iphone 3gs was assured motherboard was good just wouldn't turn on so i brought a battery from eBay so I replaced the old battery and even with the phone off it feels very hot and won't even turn on have i done something wrong?

Where did you get the battery from. Sounds like the battery is defective.

Some one from eBay this is the 2nd one and I was assured that it was working could it have fried the motherboard?
