I need recommendations for replacing my Time Warner cable modem that use to connect with Earthlink. It is old and very intermittent, in order to move from a Ethernet connection to wireless I have unplug and reboot it. Does anyone have a suggestion on a good cable modem. Also, what role can a router play in my local network.

Thanks.

Your cable company should give you (allow you to rent) a suitable modem. The coax plugs into the modem, and an ethernet cable plugs from the modem into a router.

The router should have LAN ports as well as WiFi and will allow you to connect multiple computers together and share the same internet connection. Most routers also have built in firewalls which are absolutely necessary to keep your computers secure. Bottom line, even if you only have one computer, it is a good idea to buy a router if for nothing else but the firewall.
