I purchased a 15" MBP secondhand recently, and after getting it home I noticed the screen hinges had some wobble when I opened it up. I did a little research and couldn't find much info. Took it to the Apple Store, where they were more than happy to try and charge me $601.24 to replace the entire top of the laptop. I then took it to another tech and they couldn't source any replacement parts. Does anyone know where I can get these replacement hinges from? I like this MBP, but I'm not spending that kind of money to fix such an easy, cheap little hardware piece. Any links would be appreciated.

And yes, I already tried having the screws tightened :)

You cannot just change the hinges. The displays are fused together and do not come apart. The entire display assembly gets replaced. That's why the store quoted what they did.

And both @lcseds and @hallux are incorrect. While it’s too late for the OP, the correct answer should be here for others searching for the same answer.

You can, in fact, replace the hinges on either side of the MacBook Pro Retina a1398. You have to remove the display assembly, remove the clutch cover, then replace the hinge that’s broken.

Either hinge will come as a cable/hinge assembly with either the LVDS cable or WiFi cable/antenna. Search eBay for a1398 hinge and you will find either one you need.

fixit.com will give you display assembly removal instructions, and cable/hinge replacement. https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBoo...splay+Early+2013+LCD+Cable+Replacement/124311

To be fair - Apple does not sell the parts for the repair, there is not a repair procedure listed by Apple (I just checked again), nor were the parts available to repair centers for warranty repairs. I was looking at the Apple processes, which is what the shops would also reference.

You used to be able to tighten the clutch. Is there something obvious that says the OP's hinge is broken? I remember with the TiBook it was insanely obvious as the hinge was on the outside. :)

On my 2012 Macbook Pro the bolts had actually backed out on one side, tightened the bolt after adding a drop of loctite and all is well. His may have been the same.

I had loose hinges and clutch on my rMBP mid-2012, 10,1. The tear down and fix are described in several YouTube videos. The repair took a little over an hour; you’ll need to buy a tool kit (iFixIt or Amazon). Again, your hinges are probably OK.
