Does anyone have any ideas where I can buy a new (or used) superdrive for my 17" 800MHz LCD iMac? I contacted an Apple repair centre who quoted me £440 for the drive!!! They must be joking!

Anyone have any ideas on a replacement? I want an replacement internal drive and not a firewire jobbie.

Check System Profiler your iMac probably has a Pioneer DVR-104 or DVR-105 DVD burner.

You should be able to purchase the current model DVR-107 for about $100 from just about any computer retailer, you'll probably want the black version to match the current drive. Try Froogle for online stores selling it.

Edit: I just realised you're obviously in the UK. Try Dabs (hopefully that link works) they have the Black DVR-107 for £68.99, Micro Anvika may also have it.

I've just checked my system profiler and it says this:

HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GCA-4020B:

Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Model: HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GCA-4020B
Revision: D02E
Serial Number:
Drive Type: CD-RW/DVD-RW
Disc Burning: Apple Supported/Shipped
Removable Media: Yes
Detachable Drive: No
Protocol: ATAPI
Unit Number: 1
Socket Type: Internal

Is that the Hitatchi Drive?

Actually i've discovered that it is a Hitachi (or Goldstar) drive. The real question is - could I replace it with the Pioneer one in my iMac and would it work? The Hitachi one is about £100 more expensive than the Pioneer.

HL-DT-ST is produced by Hitachi and LG.

You best bet is to get a Pioneer DVD writer, as they're the most compatible w/ Macs.

So I wouldn't have any problem replacing the Hitachi one with the poineer then?

You guys rock! I was getting really depressed about the whole £250 plus repair bill. I'm a new mac convert and love them but that really pushed me over the edge..

You might want to check out the Pioneer 107/A07 drive. I think Panther got full support for it in a recent update. Double the speed of the x06, quadruple the speed of the x05. 8x media is still hard to find but the speed will be there when you're ready. But check it out first. I could be wrong.

Glad to help MacRy, if you're planning to do the upgrade yourself this is a pretty good take-apart guide for the job or you could just download the Apple take-apart manual here.

Did you even read any of the previous posts in this thread? Every post has referred to that drive.

Fantastic. Seriously guys, thanks a lot you've all been really helpful. May not take it to bits myself though as i'm notoriously clumsy and i'm bound to balls it up and melt something (probably my own body parts). :)
