I've just purchased a 2011 27" iMac from my friend, who has gone back to his PC. It's only three weeks old, but in this short amount of time he has managed to lose the install discs!

Could anybody tell me how I work out what version of the Snow Leopard recovery discs I need? I'd tried using the ones from my brothers 24" iMac but to no avail, so I assume they are system specific.

Thanks for the speedy reply, i've already upgraded to lion via the up-to-date program, but as it was a download from the App Store I didn't think i'd be able to use it for recovery/bootcamp purposes?

Your iMac should be able to go into recovery mode by holding down command+R at startup. You can go use disk utility, reinstall Lion, recover from Time Machine, etc. If there's any problems it connects wirelessly and re-downloads what's needed.
