It depends on where you bought it and exchange it.
Say you purchase your phone at best buy and then exchange it at apple. Try to return it at BB and if thy notice that the serial numbers don't match, they'll not let you.
If you bought/exchanged it at apple, you should be able to return it.

Bought mine from an Apple Store on Launch Day, exchanged it a week later, just returned it today with zero fuss.
Yeah, if you buy from apple, exchange with apple, return to apple, no problem.
If you buy from AT&T, exchange with apple, return to AT&T or apple, there will be problems.
If you buy from AT&T, exchange with apple, return to AT&T or apple, there will be problems.
