Hi,
I currently have a base config 2010 13" MBP and a base config 2011 21.5" iMac. I am looking to upgrade the MBP, but am unsure whether to go for a 13" or 15" MBP, (possibly a retina display, although my funds are somewhat limited even with student discount) or maybe a MBA. I'd really like the 15" rMBP, as the ideal solution for me would be to replace both of my current devices. I rarely use the MBP, but it is useful when I go away and cannot take the iMac, hence wanting a notebook. I adore the iMac, but would much rather have just one device and possibly an external monitor.
My main question is: will an Air be anywhere near as powerful as my iMac, or at least more powerful than my poor old MBP? If not, what would be the best option, 13" or 15", retina or not? I guess it hinges mostly on the resale value for my current devices - I have no idea what they're worth (I'm imagining not a lot!).
I do like to play games on my iMac, although in general I do not play particularly intensive games (Civ 5 is probably the most intensive that I get!). I use it for college work, browsing the web, the odd bit of coding for fun... I don't tend to do any photo/video/audio work, although I occasionally use Photoshop and GarageBand.
I'd really appreciate anyone's ideas, I just cannot seem to decide what the best idea would be, especially as I don't know my exact budget, as it depends entirely on how much I can sell my current machines for.
For reference, I am in the UK and am eligible for the student discount offered by Apple.
Thank you!
