Gday!

My 2019 MBP is sadly on the fritz. it’s a 15.4”, i9, 32GB RAM. Until recently it’s been a good unit, but it now has some gremlins and needs repairs. It’s usable, but the battery needs replacing and there’s some other hardware issues causing major issues.

I use it with two LG 27” 5k monitors at my office, and a Samsung 49” ultra wide in my home office. The ultra wide is great, but can’t match the sharpness of the 5k monitors.

I took out an extended warranty with the retailer, rather than AppleCare, so instead of repair I get a brand new computer. The 16” MBP is a great machine, but obviously this is a terrible time to buy a new MBP.

I’ve also been looking to upgrade to a pair of 32-35” monitors, but they all lack the res of the 5k monitors unless I pay for the XDRs, which I’m not prepared to do for my use case. Cue sad trombone.

Ultimately I’ve been on the road a bit, so I need a powerful machine for mixed use, and a decent on desk setup with 2-3 large monitors. I work in marketing, and do anything from photo/video editing to heavy sessions in RAM hungry Chrome.

Unfortunately it appears I’m left with a bunch of pretty crappy options.
  1. Replace it with a 16” MBP, and wait for the next cycle to upgrade to an M1X/M2
  2. Hand off my 5ks to a staff member, replace it with a 13” MBP M1 with another 49” ultrawide
  3. Buy a cheap MBA for travel and use an iMac with the 5ks in my office. Even today there’s some inconvenience in two computers, not to mention waste.

if the 13” MBP M1 would accept two 5k monitors, or Apple had a cheaper but still high res 32” monitor, this would be easy, but sadly not.

Just curious what others have done here, and if there are any solutions I’m missing.
