Replacing a failed drive in a external RAID.

I have a Lacie 4Big that just had a drive fail, I am going to the store now to pick up a replacement. Unfortunately Lacie does not provide much detailed guidance since they just say buy their replacement drives. Do I need to format the new drive in any way before I insert it in to the raid enclosure to start rebuilding?
