Replacing airport extreme with express. Can you run the extreme as a hub

My 6 year old extreme is finally giving me problems. I want to change it out for express. I want the faster port an dual band wifi. My question is if I can use my old extreme as just a hub?

It would actually work out perfectly if I stash it behind my entertainment center for Xbox and PlayStation use. Where my router is currently located is inconvenient for the things that I actually use plugged in.

Can I expect the same range from the express that I get from the extreme?

As long as the part of your Extreme that is giving you problems is not the Ethernet ports then it should be no problem running it as a hub. You may want to go in and turn off the WiFi.
