I have had conflicting reports about whether the batteries are glued in.

Once source said 2012 or older are NOT glued in but newer version are. But I think they meant the MBP not MBA.

So as I understand it the pre 2018 MBA replacing is not quite as easy as the pre 2013 MBP but easier than the later year models.
 
There's very little reason to depend on opinions or simple internet mis-information.
You can check the various repair steps @ iFixit.com, in particular the teardowns for your chosen Mac laptop. You will quickly find good information about removing the battery on most any mac laptop.

Thanks for your response, I had reviews the MBA battery replacements at ifixit.com however they do not seem to have all year models posted but I believe they showed 2012 ans 2015 as using the same procedure.
