Hi all,

I have 2008 Mac Pro (not early one but later 2008)

and found that the DVD-R/RW drive is slightly broken. The tray won't be closed fully and dvd is not recognized. So I have to manually push the tray so that Mac Pro will recognize the disc. Plus I have to use the command line drutil eject tray 1 something like that.. to eject the tray.

My question is, can I replace the dvd-R/RW drive to any brand new internal DVD-R/RW drive? Is there any compatibility issue for that?

Thanks for your replies!

If it is a 2008, you will need to get a IDE drive, not SATA. (pre-Nehalems only used SATA for HDDs) Also, you will probably have to remove the drive's faceplate to get it to open. Other than that, it's plug and play. Instructions are in your owner's manual.

Oh my god.. Thank you!!!
After I removed the drive's faceplate, it works perfectly :D

I was asking a noob question but thank you so much for the detailed reply! :D
