Hello all,
I have an IBM Xserve currently running Raid 1 with 4 additional scuzzies in a networked environment with <10 users; I am and have administered this setup since SBS 4.5.
At any rate; over the years, I have slowly replaced each and every machine with iMacs and am in the process of churning my last 2 machines over to the family. I was (in the past) very reliant on Exchange server, and I ran it for my office locally; along with proxy, IIS, ISA, and SQL. I have since changed to a wireless network as well utilizing the WPA2 protocol.
Getting to my questions/help (and thanks for your patience) I am now considering SL server for many reasons; which included the following:
My company now utilizes an exchange server (07) off site. This is an SSL connection ONLY, and they do not, nor will they allow an IMAP/POP connection.
Secondly, main program used in the office is now served off site as well, meaning I no longer need my hosting of the primary server for SQL database.
My questions are the following:
Can I put SL server in this environment (running wireless N) on a Mac Mini?
Does SL Server support the exchange module and distribute to the client machines like my current exchange server does; or is this only handled by the client using Mail (as a glorified POP connection?) <--- I have tested this and SL is not push capable.
Does SL server offer many of the Sharing and Security measures that SBS offers me on user setup, and sharing of data throughout the network?
Are there any measures/protocols one would recommend for/against to running SL server?
Do the client machines security/login measures all handled by the SL server much like the Active Directory in Server 2003? If so, what pros-cons would you offer me in giving me some knowledge for or against me changing over?
I remote in a lot to my Server for tweaks and fixing when I am out, can I do the same should my office require support? I do not know too many local tech's that would know what to do in case of down time. If so, is it as simple as Remote Desktop Connection/ I am not a fan of back to my mac, just too damn slow.
Finally; Can an external drive (Say 2tb) handle the backups of the SL/ and all 6 machines connected to the wireless router/ or should I consider a Drobo, or daisy chain some drives?
Thanks very much in advance for your assistance/knowledge sharing experiences.
