Replacing Superdrive in C2D MBP

Hi,

My superdrive died some time ago in my C2D macbook pro. This was their first release of the c2d mbp.

I'm considering either getting an external or putting a new superdrive in.

2 questions:

Are the current superdrives any different then the ones in my machine? What are the basic specs of the piece I'm looking for?

and, is this a part that is (somewhat) easily replaceable by the user, or would I need to get a professional to install it?

I think if you have to ask, it's not something you should really do yourself. Take a look at an iFixIt guide for your model of Mac to see how complicated it may get.
