So, I am pretty sure the optical drive on my MBP is failing as I am having trouble installing software like windows, office for mac, and just burning stuff. So, I did a search here and look it up at ifix it, but I am not sure what is the right model I should be looking at. I have the first gen MBP with the Core Duo CPU. iFix it lists two models UJ-857-C and UJ-867. So, will both work or is one of them only going to work? I know my original optical drive could not burn DL dvds, but it seems like both of these can though? Ideas? Thank you.

Do you have any suggestions on what a quality model I should look at? Maybe even a blu-ray drive out of curiosity?

Most of them are pretty good nowadays. If you decide on a Blu-ray drive, make sure it can write something - even if it's a CD or DVD. Those will work with MakeMKV, the only OS X software capable of ripping Blu-ray discs under OS X. Toshiba, LG, the usual suspects are all pretty decent.

What interface should I be looking at? I think I am going to stick dvd drive, but still not sure what brand works better with a MBP, and which is the lowest cost option.

Well I think I will skip blu-ray and try to go for a dual layer dvd burner. Do you have any suggestions on a model I should look at?

Wait, shouldn't I be looking at 12.5mm drives that are slot loading, or will this 12.7mm non slot loading drive not be an issue? What about on ebay, do you know of any respectable retailers on there? Personally, kind of prefer a drive thats not slot loading as I have had a cd stuck in my old ibook a few times that I had some trouble of ejecting. Thank you.

Unfortunately, I've never bought or replaced a superdrive, so I'm a bit nervous about offering opinions on such things. I suspect you should check ratings (e.g., Reseller Ratings if a real company) and look for others who've done the same as you need (i.e., using Google or one of the other engines).
