IHS iSuppli today issued a report detailing five components of the iPad 2 that are sourced from Japanese suppliers, indicating that they could see shortages in the wake of the Japanese earthquake that has shut down a number of manufacturing facilities in the country. The IHS iSuppli teardown analysis of the iPad 2 so far has been able to identify five parts sourced from Japanese suppliers: NAND flash from Toshiba Corp., dynamic random access memory (DRAM) made by Elpida Memory Inc., an electronic compass from AKM Semiconductor, the touch screen overlay glass likely from Asahi Glass Co. and the system battery from Apple Japan Inc.

There potentially are other components from Japan in the iPad 2, however, the teardown analysis process cannot always identify all components' countries of origin. The report notes that some of those manufacturers remain in operation following the earthquake, but logistics issues, employee absences, and rolling blackouts as the country seeks to rebuild its infrastructure could still hamper production and delivery of the needed parts.

While NAND flash and DRAM can likely be sourced from other vendors, Apple may have more difficulty replacing any lost production of the compass and glass components of the device. And with the battery appearing to be a custom design produced by Apple's own Japanese arm, a backup supplier is likely not available at this time.

For its part, Apple's manufacturing partner Foxconn has indicated that it is not currently experiencing any component shortages for the devices it is assembling, with industry sources suggesting that Foxconn should still have a 2-3 week supply of needed components and is likely working to secure additional supplies, whether it be from the usual suppliers or through alternative means. As there are rumors that Apple will soon be out of product supplies because Japan's earthquake has caused shortages of components are circulating in the IT industry, Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry), which declined to comment on specific clients, reemphasized that the company will not see any component shortages in the short term, and said the company has already prepared backup suppliers. Even if component supplies do fall into shortage, Foxconn's capability of securing supply resources is still much better than its competitors, the company added. Market watchers also pointed out that Foxconn should still have about 2-3 weeks of component inventory left as IT players normally keep a certain level of inventory on hand for safety.Apple's iPad 2 has seen significant demand, and the company has had difficulty keeping up with the flow of online orders and in-store lines. Shipping estimates for new online orders quickly slipped to 4-5 weeks, and even some of those who were among the first to place online orders last week have yet to see movement on their shipments. Meanwhile, availability at the company's retail stores has been extremely sparse, with only sporadic shipments arriving and even then containing only small supplies of select models.

Got to get me a glowPad

I know this story wasn't posted to be insensitive, but is this really that important? They just suffered from the 5th-strongest recorded earthquake (at least since record-keeping began around 1900) and a giant tsunami. You can wait a little longer for your iPad.

I guess people are just curious though...

Prayers that all in Japan will return to normal as quickly as possible so the victims of this horrible event can cope with their losses and begin the healing process.

+1 More important things in life. I'll get my order when I get my order.

Don't care much about our toys getting delayed, just hoping that the survivors get back to a normal life soon in Japan. We're living in very difficult times.

You have to be a real ass to think that you getting your Ipad is more importatnt than a country going through something like Japan is going through right now

I guess that over the next few weeks there will be shortages and delays to lots of products across many industries, but the Japanese have more important things to deal with for now.

This is not an article about 1 person wanting an iPad and complaining that they can't get it. This is a story about a multiple-billion dollar company with investors who want to know what's going to happen this year. This is important news for a lot of people.

There is nothing wrong or insensitive about this in any way.

If the iPad is going to experience supply constraints, you have to wonder what will happen to the various competitors to the iPad this year. I would think they would be similarly affected?

I really want an iPad 2 when demand drops ... but it can wait... as long as everything in Japan gets better.

Its alot more important for Japan to rebuild

Totally agree, but to be honest (and also not meaning to sounds insensitive), this site is really about Mac/Apple stuff in isolation with no reference to the outside world, so this article shouldn't be seen as belittling the awful events in Japan. There's rarely anything on here that is relevant in the 'real' world, but it's still valid within the confines and context of the this site.

Someone posted this as a rumor in the iPad forum yesterday. MY comments there. In regard to this thread:

"touch screen overlay glass likely from Asahi Glass Co"

Is that Corning? People have often speculated that the overlay glass is Gorilla glass (as well as for iPhone) but no one has substantiated that. Is Asahi the parent/daughter company of Corning? Or has there been confirmation somewhere that it is indeed NOT Corning Gorrilla Glass?

Just curious

Not only that, but Japan's future depends upon the recovery of its economy. Once the humanitarian crisis is over, the long road of rebuilding starts... So yeah, I hope nobody is insensitive enough to complain about a delayed iPad, but at the same time people who patiently wait for Japanese electronics, automobiles, etc. are actually helping. The worst thing that could happen is that it takes them so long to rebuild that folks start turing elsewhere.

I'll Be Happy To Wait --- much more important considerations for the Japanize than worrying about shipping out parts for a toy....

Whoa, whoa. Where was all this sensitivity an concern when people were actually standing in line to hand over $500+ to Apple on the morning after the earthquake struck? I'm sure relief organizations could've made use of that money.

Anyway, glad to be informed of the specific futher economic impact of the earthquake.

radioactive

This is not in poor taste, I am praying for the Japanese.
But I just want to know if radioactive particles will go on Japanese parts within the iPad, and will that make the iPad thus radioactive?

Yes, exactly.

I'm always amazed when people complain that talking about a country's RECOVERY is insensitive.

As opposed to what? Should we be ignoring them? Hoping they fail? I think everyone should be talking about when and how Japan can get back on their feet. (Along with how others can help. Any guess if Apple will send these companies help in order to get them fixed faster? Wouldn't surprise me.)

I can wait too.

It is much more important that these poor folks get some help and understanding. This is a mega disaster affecting millions of people directly... and will continue to do so for months, if not years.

Often, I feel guilty about my own impatience and "want" for this toy... Please take your time suppliers - most of us know that you have families and real tragedies occurring.

Much love and prayers.

What constitutes insensitivity varies with opinion...so dont rebuke and then apply your own bias perception as fact.
Anyhoo, I hope you would agree that "investors who want to know what's going to happen this year" is slightly less important than a 9.0 earthquake, 6500+ people dead, and possible radiation exposure. But of course thats just my OP. I get your point about recovery and the like...of course thats important. I just dont believe those discussions are totally salient at this time.

+1. My sentiments exactly. Not trying to rain on anyone's parade here as I like :apple: products just as much as the next guy/gal. However, I understood that ordering online meant I WOULD NOT have the device on day 1. Some of the comments and lack of patience in another thread are laughable. Hello...did anyone see what happened last week in Japan? Geez.
