I'm running 10.4.11 with all updates applied. I'm using Xilisoft DVD Copy to create DVD ISO images from movie discs that I have here. If I double-click on any of these ISO images in finder, the OS instantly crashes. I get that grey box in the middle of the screen that says I need to power down and reboot.

These ISO images are all good, I can burn them using several different disc burning programs and end up with a valid DVD movie disc so I know they aren't corrupt. FYI the default application to open ISO's is the Apple Disk Mounter utility, so I assume that's what it's using when I double click on one of them.

FWIW, I saw this exact same behavior on my old iBook so I know it's not isolated and not a problem specific to my machine. Anyone else seeing this behavior on 10.4? How about with 10.5? Does Apple have any mechanism for bug reporting?

You highlighted the file and did GET INFO (command-I) in Finder?

Should should you what app is set as the default.

Also looking at the error log might show you what is happening, along with panic logs.

Yes, the GET INFO is what shows the apple disk mounter utility.

Can you point me to where one might find these error/panic logs?
