I currently have a home router/satellite system with dedicated wireless backhaul across access points, and one of these days, I'll probably get antsy enough to pull ethernet and do a proper Ubiquiti setup.

In the meantime, I have a couple old Airport Time Capsule routers that served as an on-site backup medium for awhile.

I'm aware of the AFP deprecation for macOS 27 (i.e., in 2026).

I really liked that hardware and the UI/UX. As it would be a step backward in performance and arguably security to reuse them primarily, is there some other use or idea for these things that perhaps I'm overlooking?

TIA.

Since AFP is going away, switching to SMB or NFS shares would be better for backups. Some folks use Time Capsules just as network-attached storage with minimal routing features. Do you want to keep any router functionality, or just storage?
