Request - Tips to use the least data possible

Hey Guys,

I'm sure there's some older threads on this but with the new iOS features like automatic App downloads and such I'm looking for something a little more updated.
I'm going to be roaming next month and the only thing I want is to get emails... and obviously I don't want anything else being downloaded automatically.. don't even need the pictures in emails.
If someone could give me some tips that would be appreciated.

Use WiFi when possible, turn off all push notifications for all and any apps.

Turn all email accounts on to Manual.
Turn push off.
Turn off data roaming.
Go to settings > Store and flip the switch for downloading stuff automatically.

Go to settings and go to restrictions and then block safari and app store and YouTube and iTunes and in app purchases. Now go to notifications and disable all of them. Now go to air plane mode and turn it on. Then go to wifi and turn it on and let it connect. Lastly go to general and turn data off.
