resaving parts of movies as nondestructively as poss..

Just wanting some pointers on the best/quickest way to extract a short part of a movie and resave it.. i need to do this on some xvid movies as well as h264 avis. i have creative suite 4 but it seems to choke on the xvids and also be generally very slow.
any ideas? thanks.

I like Quicktime Pro + Perian. You can copy-paste and save self-contained or referenced Quicktime files.

it's very easy with iMovie. If you import the file into iMovie as an 'event', you can select and drag over bits and pieces into the project for export non destructively.

I thought iMovie converted everything to DV for editing.

i had thought imovie was destructive as well, same way most timeline editors force you to choose format even before you import a file onto your timeline. i may give it a shot anyway though since i already have it.

if it can export xvid though i might do it. after effects crashed when i tried to load up this vid..
